Runway, Taxiway, Apron Planning and Design (EASA CS & GM)

The new European regulations for aerodrome and competent authorities came into force in 2014 and replaced the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) specified by ICAO for most aerodromes.
This course focusses on the EASA regulations related to Aerodrome Planning and Design as specified in the Certification Specifications and the Guidance Material.
It enables the participants to interpret and implement the EASA certification specifications related to Runways, Taxiways, Aprons and adjacent areas, e.g. for planning purposes or as fundamentals for building the Certification Basis within an initial Aerodrome certification procedure or change of the certificate. Based on best practices, the participants will become knowledgeable about the configuration, dimensioning and design of these infrastructural elements and will learn how to fulfill relevant EASA requirements. Furthermore, particular attention is set on the theoretical and practical background of the above mentioned EU requirements.
Besides airport operations staff and planning engineers, this course also targets Aviation Authorities inspectors and aerodrome internal auditing staff in charge of monitoring the compliance or the aerodrome infrastructure with the applicable regulations.
Notes:
- International attendees not located within an EASA Member State may be advised to participate in the training course “Runway, Taxiway, Apron Planning and Design (ICAO Annex 14)”, as ICAO specifications may be applicable in your country. EASA specifications for aerodrome design are aligned to ICAO requirements, and therefore both proposed courses are very similar. However, each course is adapted to the legal context, the rule structure, and makes direct references to the applicable written regulations.

- Further relevant international regulations (e.g. ICAO, FAA)
- Legal binding principles
- Overview of additional guidance material (e. g. ICAO manuals, IATA/ACI documentation)
- Definition of the most critical aircraft
- Relevant aircraft performance and geometric parameters (e. g. speed and weight limitations, wheel base and datum length)
- Handling of non-compliances (mitigation measures, safety assessments)
Runway Planning and Design
- Dimensioning, configuration and design of runways
- Markings (e.g. centre line, side stripe, touchdown zone)
- Signs (e.g. information and mandatory instruction signs)
- Lights (e.g. centre line lights, approach lighting systems)
- Runway shoulders and strips
- Runway holding positions
- Obstacle limitation requirements
Taxiway and Apron Planning and Design
- Design, dimensioning and configuration of manoeuvring areas and aprons
- Discussion of different manoeuvring area and apron concepts
- Calculation of aircraft turning curves (Fillet Design)
- Taxi guidance components (intermediate holding positions, stop bars and leading on lights)
- Taxiways, rapid exit taxiways, holding bays and bypasses
- Aircraft stands, aircraft stand taxi lanes, apron taxiways, aerodrome service roads
- Taxiway shoulders and strips
- Markings (e.g. for taxi guidance, holding positions)

Hardy is a graduated aeronautical engineer and holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering (Aviation). He is specialised in aerodrome planning and infrastructure design as well as aerodrome operations and compliance. His specialisation is not only supplemented by his experience as an aircraft mechanic, but also by his activities as a certified lighting planner.
As a vital part of our aerodrome planning department within the consulting division of airsight, Hardy supports our customers in questions regarding the design and development of aerodrome movement areas, such as aprons and taxiways, and in questions of daily operations, such as ad hoc enquiries for the handling planning of special aircraft activities.
Hardy has been working on several projects for airsight. These projects recently included the airports of Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Douala, Luxembourg, Sydney, and Yaoundé.
Denis Thiemer, Dipl.-Ing.
Denis holds a diploma in Transport Engineering and is further specialised in aerodrome design and operations with wide ranging experience in airside infrastructure design and aerodrome safety as well as compliance with ICAO SARPs and European aerodrome regulations.
With his expert knowledge and expertise, he has been supporting numerous airports worldwide in planning tasks within airside expansion and redesign projects, compliance assessments and aeronautical studies. Also, he assists clients in developing innovative operational concepts for safe and efficient airside operations. Another one of his fields of activity is Advanced Air Mobility and the operation of eVTOL aircraft, where he has been involved in vertiport feasibility studies, conceptual design tasks and associated approval processes. Furthermore, he is an instructor for a variety of airsight’s training courses.
Denis realized projects with aerodrome operators in Germany and abroad (e.g. Australia, Belgium, Cameroon, Jamaica, Luxembourg and New Zealand). Most recently he led a major aircraft stand redesign project with Frankfurt Airport aiming for compliance with EASA Certification Specifications for Aerodrome Design.

Course Location
Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. The accommodation and travel costs are at the charge of the participants.
