Introduction to Unmanned Aviation

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), drones – there are many terms for this rapidly developing technology. While offering safety and security for aerodrome operators, there are risks associated with them that need to be considered and counteracted.
After clarifying the terms and definitions related to unmanned aviation we will focus on the constantly evolving EU legal framework. You will become familiar with EASA´s risk-based approach to regulating the operation of UAS and the UAS operation categories (Regulation (EU) 2019/947 and 2019/945). While the basic concept is valid for all drones, this training focuses on the civil use of UAS in the open and specific category.
Regulations (EU) 2021/664, 2021/665 and 2021/666 on U-Space lay down rules for the safe integration of manned and unmanned aviation. We will introduce U-Space services and discuss challenges related to U-Space such as electronic conspicuity or a common altitude reference system.
Small UAS may be used at aerodromes for several purposes such as surface inspection and security applications. We will discuss the authorizations needed to operate small UAS in the airport environment.
The Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) developed the Specific Operations Risks Assessment (SORA). SORA is a multi-stage analysis which assigns two risk classes - Air Risk Class (ARC) and Ground Risk Class (GRC) - and enables operators to determine a so-called Specific Assurance & Integrity Level (SAIL) of an intended operation of UAS. Based on the SAIL mitigation measures are defined to meet Operational Safety Objectives (OSO).
As any vehicle drones may be misused. You will learn about research on the vulnerability of manned aircraft to drone strikes. We will discuss how aerodrome operators can prepare themselves to successfully handle drone occurrences. The training will enable you to understand the strengths and weaknesses of different counter sUAS technologies and the need to tailor a system to your airport. To successfully handle drone occurrences many stakeholders need to cooperate. We will discuss available guidelines on drone occurrence management.

Veronica Schömer, Pilot B787, M. Eng.
Veronica is a highly knowledgeable and experienced aviation expert with a passion for flight safety. She took her first steps into aviation more than 20 years ago in a glider club. As first officer on Boeing 737 and senior first officer on Boeing 747 and 787 Veronica gained more than 17 years of experience in commercial aviation with 7000 flight hours. She holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Specialising in European aviation regulations, and with her thesis on Confidential Safety Reporting as a starting point, Veronica strives for the adaption of safety concepts known from commercial aviation to the rapidly evolving and diverse drone industry.
As a professional trainer, she has trained students of RWTH Aachen University in its flight simulator and developed training concepts to introduce new software to pilots.
With the JARUS Industry Stakeholder Board Veronica supports the successful integration of manned and unmanned aviation.

Course Location
Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. The accommodation and travel costs are at the charge of the participants. Please note that airsight does not perform any travel and hotel bookings for the participants. Rooms can however be booked directly by the participants by contacting the hotel.
The course fee includes the registration, training material and examination. For non-virtual courses, coffee breaks and business lunch are also included.

last training day: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
