Precision Approach Path Indicator relocation study
Luxembourg Airport
In order to provide a correct visual indication, the relative position of the PAPI to the threshold needs to be precisely positioned and the system well calibrated.
The Administration de la Navigation Aérienne (ANA), responsible for Luxembourg Airport’s air navigation equipment, commissioned airsight to determine the optimal relocation of the existing PAPI within a runway rehabilitation project.
For this exercise, in accordance with the applicable guidance material, numerous criteria were taken into account e.g. critical aircraft type, minimum wheel clearance – and eye height – over threshold, achievable harmonisation with ILS signal slope, obstacle situation, ground and runway elevation profile, etc.
An additional element of the study was to assess the operational advantages and disadvantages of a PAPI System utilising LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode).
